The Name Game: How a Homes Moniker Can Add to Its Value

pecking house

Rowdy Rooster is an Indian takeout spot in the East Village with a great fried chicken sandwich and an even better vada pao. Eric Huang grew up in his family’s Chinese-American restaurant in Queens. An amateur cellist turned subpar college student turned chef, he decided to dedicate his career to restaurants despite crushing student debt.

Headlines flew about the then takeout and delivery-only spot’s weeks-long waitlist. Now, Huang and his business partner Maya Ferrante are poised to open Pecking House’s first permanent location this month. And it all took somewhere between overnight and a lifetime to execute. It has been his lifelong dream to create a restaurant that challenges preconceived Western notions about Chinese cuisine and embarked on this journey in the Spring of 2020. With his family’s restaurant, Peking House, shuttered due to the pandemic, he stepped in and started frying chicken and delivering it to New Yorkers trapped in their apartments, thus Pecking House was born. Pecking House became one of the pandemic’s most popular pop-ups with a waitlist of over 10,000 people.

Cool Food Events and Pop-Ups to Check Out This Week in Los Angeles: April 26

We use three-and-a-half pound chickens from Bell & Evans Farm in Pennsylvania, which are given ample indoor and outdoor space to roam, and fed a diet without antibiotics or GMOs. The Barish, the quieter steakhouse opening from Nancy Silverton tucked inside the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel, has closed without as much as a whisper. Click on the restaurant’s website to see that a restaurant called Shirley Brasserie has already taken its place.

For homeowners in Britain who wish to add or change the name of a property, the process is simple. The owner of a property that already has a name, rather than a number, can officially  change it by contacting the local council to request permission. If the new house name is deemed suitable and doesn’t duplicate an existing local name, the owner can pay a small fee to alter it, after which the change will be formally registered by Royal Mail. The owner of a house with a number cannot change or remove the number from the address, but can follow the same procedure to formally add a name to the property. Properties named The Manor House were found to command the highest price tag in England and Wales in a recent study by the property firm into premiums paid for particular house names, with an average sale price £1.42 million. Properties called The Manor or Manor House, by contrast, sold for an average of £967,117.

Each bite starts with a crunch, then quickly yields to a level of juiciness that makes you wonder if Pecking was trying to mimic a Shanghainese soup dumpling. Sugar balances out the heat at first, until the seasonings build, making your lips tingle and stomach glow for a solid half hour. Think of the spice as an edible hand warmer for your insides. And for those who do takeout, note that the crunch factor is no less powerful three full hours after ordering, as long as you have a toaster oven nearby.

I’ve only been living here for about two years, but this corner felt great. We’re right on the Flatbush artery next to Barclays Center. To call Pecking House’s chicken mid-level spicy is like calling Blair Witch a medium scary movie or a blue dart frog a halfway poisonous amphibian. Here, in a roomy Park Slope space, chef Eric Huang camouflages his birds in a shiny sauce laced with sugar, Sichuan peppercorns, monosodium glutamate, and Tianjin chiles — a North Asian nightshade that looks like a cartoon firecracker.

The Best Restaurants In Prospect Heights

A 2019 poll by onthemarket.com found that Britons would pay up to £50,000 more for homes on streets with regally titled names, such as Royal, Palace, King or Queen. Similarly, a study by London estate agents Wetherell found that the most sought-after addresses can add up to 40% to the price of a home. In general, he added, a house that has a name might be expected to command a higher price tag than one with a number. But some of the findings suggest that house names also play a role in stimulating the imagination, painting a picture in the minds of buyers that might make a house appear particularly appealing. Many of the names on the list are linked to specific types of historic property, which tend to command high prices due to their age and size. Chick Chick on the UWS serves an entire menu dedicated to Korean fried chicken, and you should (in turn) dedicate yourself to their entire menu.

The tools and the space and the singular place will allow the restaurant to consistently supply what it’s known for and continue to grow. Overnight success is like a Broadway musical come to life. Somebody has such a great idea or invention or TikTok that the world can’t help but stand and applaud. It’s a lot of fun in one act, and it almost always misses the big picture.

Ferrante attributes some of its early success to the dearth of exciting food experiences to be had during the early days of COVID. She says, “I was one of those people—like, I wasn’t like them [she’s a chef]—but I had an infant. When I ordered it, it was like, ‘this is the best thing I’ve eaten in a really, really long time.’ It was exciting.” Huang still boggles over Pecking House’s rocket rise. “I think it would take some distance to gain a perspective to see what was really going on. But, as you know, I never was in lockdown—I never once stopped working.” Huang suspects that the built-in exclusivity of the waitlist helped. “We were delivering a good meal with this fun story, and it felt like such a feat to have gotten a delivery at all.

What started as a delivery operation with weeks-long waiting lists now has a permanent home in Prospect Heights. Pecking House’s new counter-service location looks a bit like a small cafeteria at a trendy tech company, but it’s a perfectly fine place to consume large amounts of poultry. Your priority should be the chili fried chicken with thick, crunchy skin covered in a firecracker dry rub, which you can get in a huge sandwich or as a meal with sides.

Mexican Riviera Cruises 7-Day Mexico Cruises

mexico cruise deals

The ports on Mexico's eastern coast are often lumped together with other Central American ports or island destinations on Western Caribbean cruises. Do a bit of digging, and you can find three- to five-night cruises from Galveston, Texas; New Orleans; and Mobile, Alabama, that visit only Mexican ports, including Cozumel, Costa Maya and Progreso. The peak cruise season on Mexico’s Caribbean coast is from December to April, when the days are warm and sunny, with little rain other than the occasional short, sharp evening shower. You can also cruise to Mexico’s Caribbean coast in the shoulder season, from July to November; there may be a little more rain, but hurricanes are rare here. Your safety is our priority and ships can be moved if a hurricane is forecast. Sail to the destination of your dreams from the departure port that works best for you.

One of the most impressive aspects of the terminal is the streamlined check-in process. There’s a palpable sense of efficiency as staff members assist passengers quickly and courteously. I watch as luggage is whisked away with precision, destined to reappear seamlessly in the corresponding cabins aboard the ship. From the moment I set foot in the terminal, there’s an undeniable vibe of excitement. The terminal bustles with fellow travelers each eager to embark on their own unique voyages. These include Carnival Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, and Royal Caribbean International. Covered walkways transport cruisers along ramps between the terminal building and the ship. When debarking, there is a huge luggage hall with stainless steel tables, increasing the required space for thousands of bags. The waiting area has 1,800 seats and monitors to keep cruisers updated with information about the boarding process. A separate VIP area has comfy sofa seating for a further 250 guests. The terminal has 160 security cameras, energy-efficient lighting, and many more features.

There are also stairs up and sloped walkways if you choose to walk instead of taking the elevator. One thing to note is that you pay as you enter the garage the day your cruise departs. This way the lines to exit at the end of the cruise are shorter since there is no payment processing, getting everyone home more quickly. After getting off the ship, you’ll head down the stairs, elevator, or sloped walkway to the luggage pick-up area. One smart detail of the terminal is the introduction of large stainless steel tables, greatly increasing the amount of luggage that can fit in the terminal. During our tour we were told that CT3 can hold up to 10,000 pieces of baggage.

In the case of the Carnival Liberty, it’s most recent refurbishment took place in December 2016, prior to it’s 2021 dry dock. Port Canaveral has seven cruise terminals, each with its own unique address on either the North Side or South Side of the shipping channel. Review your boarding documents to confirm which specific terminal you should arrive at. Continue down this road and you will head straight until you are almost past all the cruise terminals. Eventually you will see a large blue sign listing all the cruise lines with an arrow that tells you to veer to the right.

Parking is $17.00 per day (rates are subject to change by the Port Authority). Parking is on your right so you will want to be in the rightmost lane, exiting just before you reach the parking garage and surface lot. Starting out, it helps to have an overview of the port before you get there. The port is located about 45 minutes due east of Orlando, on Cape Canaveral. There is only one road from Orlando to Cape Canaveral — Florida 528 (a toll road also know as the “Beachline”).

Above all, the terminal is designed to ensure that the transition from land to sea is as seamless as possible. Carnival’s innovative approach means I can dodge the biggest hassle of travel—long waits. With their online check-in process, most of my boarding formalities are taken care of before I even arrive.

Terminal 10 (1994-built) is used by NCL (Norwegian Cruise Line). In April 2023 was proposed the construction of a new cruise terminal on the Port's southern side. For season 2019, the cruise port reported a record berth booking with estimated 4,7+ million passengers. Following President Donald Trump's executive order on immigration, in late-January 2017 were officially issued reports about cruise passengers being detained by US Customs and Border Protection. All detainees had to provide background info about them, their families and also their past life in their native countries. Day At The Beach, the non-alcoholic drink option is made with strawberry puree, pineapple juice, and lemon juice. Gratuities for the hard-working staff are added on to the cost of the cruise. Some guests tip extra to crew who have gone over and above their duties.

Epic is the first cruise ship ever to have (and so many of them) "studios". All solo cruise cabins are bookable with single occupancy rates. Explore the history of the Mediterranean, relax on the waters of the Transatlantic, or feel the balmy breezes of the Caribbean..

Transatlantic crossings (RepositionCruises.com) between Europe and the Caribbean are offered seasonally, in spring and fall. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is a subsidiary company of the shipping corporation Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NCLH). NCL was founded in 1966, headquartered in Miami (Florida USA) and publicly traded (NASDAQ) company listed on NYSE (NYC). NCLH's major shareholders are the corporations Apollo Global Management (American), Genting Group (Malaysian) and TPG Capital (American). On Norwegian Epic, the Mandara Spa is a full-service spa, offering relaxing facials, hot stone massages and a full range of services for you to look and feel your best while on your cruise. For those cruising without kiddos, Spice H20 onboard Norwegian Epic is an adults-only beach-club style pool, overlooking the aft of the ship and serving up some of the best cocktails onboard. While we don’t have children or travel with other couples who do, we’ve met plenty of families that love the activities on board the Epic. The Entourage Club is a great gathering space for teens / tweens with video games, consoles, etc.

The ship is also unique with the lack of any Oceanview cabins (outside staterooms with Picture Window or Porthole Window). NCL Epic offers a variety of cabins ranging from the small Studio cabins (100 square feet) for solo travelers to the Deluxe Owners Suite at 852 square feet, in The Haven. Haven suites allow use of the exclusive Haven area, but may not always be physically located within this enclave. The Spa Staterooms on the Epic come in three varieties including the Haven Spa Suite, Spa Balcony Suite, and Spa Balcony.

Day Transatlantic From New York to Barcelona: Bermuda & Spain

With room for up to three they include two lower beds that convert into a queen-size bed, a sitting area and additional bedding to accommodate one more. These staterooms also feature curved walls, a unique bathroom treatment where every area is separate, including the shower and a modern vanity sink. These Balcony Staterooms are mid-ship, so you'll have easy access to all the delicious dining.

The layout is unusual by cruise ship standards with a split bathroom (the toilet is separate from the shower) and where the sink is in the room. With only a curtain divider, people often feel that privacy is lacking. The design is very “European” by nature, which is why it’s not well received by the customer base in America. While the design of the bathroom is polarizing when it comes to opinions, the overall room design is quite good, albeit funky with rounded elements throughout. The rooms are still in style, even 10+ years after the launch of NCL Epic.

Passes can be purchased for the entire cruise or just by the day, although the area is capacity controlled. The ship was the first “Mega” ship for Norwegian Cruise Line and features the first generation of wild and crazy activities that have now become the norm on large ships. This includes the aqua park with huge water slides (three of them!) and a 200-foot-long tube ride into a funnel/bowl. A great spot on the Epic is the adults-only Spice H2O at the rear of the ship. With a small pool and stadium seating, it’s a nice place to get away from everyone and relax.

La Cucina serves up the freshest pasta and Italian specialties, such as Veal Scaloppini with Marsala sauce. You'll want to save plenty of room for dessert here as the homemade tiramisu is a must try! If you've ever wanted to try a Brazilian barbecue, bring your appetite to Moderno Churrascaria. Try not to let yourself get full starting off with the 43-item salad bar. You'll need plenty of stomach space for the 12 slow-roasted meats coming around that will be carved tableside. If you are someone who is planning on sailing onboard Norwegian Epic, I highly recommend stopping by the Skyy Vodka Ice Bar during your sailing at least once if not multiple times!

At night the bar changes to more of a venue for music and sometimes movies on a big screen. Just like Bliss, the staff sometimes doesn’t enforce the age restriction, a disappointment. The bar is a great place to sit outside and enjoy the good weather and have any number of daily frozen specials. That said, the EPIC is probably my least favorite cruise ship. Primarily because the ship has been in locations around the world at the same time I have and always seems to be going somewhere I want or need to be.

Based on a pandemic cruise early in 2022, the employee morale just wasn’t what I’ve experienced on other cruises, but with staff shortages and a challenging work environment, it’s not at all surprising. Admittedly, this is a strange concept and I can’t quite figure out the reason behind it but it’s fun to try it once, just to say you did. The cost is about $20 per person which includes two branded drinks (Now it’s Skyy, it was Svedka).

This spot is the world's greatest dueling piano bar, playing all your favorites from the 70s, modern rock hits, and even some hip-hop classics. When it comes to specialty dining, you'll find your favorite Norwegian restaurants on Norwegian Epic. If you are celebrating a special occasion, consider a reservation at Le Bistro, renowned for its French cuisine and elegant interior. Cagney's Steakhouse features the best cuts of Certified Angus Beef. Don't miss out on other repeat guest favorites such as the Parmesan dusted truffle fries or the made-from-scratch jumbo lump crab cakes. The three alcoholic drinks are called Sweet Northern, Ice Cold, and Hazelnut Delight.

Review: Fathom's Inaugural Cruise From Miami to Cuba

This type of trip is the definition of people-to-people, with lots of educational opportunities. This is the most booked shore excursion in Havana offered as 4 hour sightseeing bus tour with 4 stops along the way. Each bus (air-conditioned motorcoach) has its own tour guide. The Old Havana City tour stops at Colon Cemetery, Morro Castle, Plaza de Revolucion (Revolutionary Square) and Cristo de la Habana (Christ of Havana statue). According to official figures, ~900,000 cruisers visited Cuba in 2018, of whom ~40% Americans.

The view from my favorite table, pictured above, kept me coming back, especially at sunset. There were so many dinner options available at each of the different restaurants over the course of the seven-day cruise that it's impossible to list them all here. Most menus offered a selection of seafood dishes (lobster thermidor, salmon and a variety of fish), meat dishes (pork, beef, duck or chicken) and vegetarian-friendly options, so there's definitely something for everyone. Check out our photo gallery of Cuba cruising photos for Norwegian Cruise Line. Keep in mind, this is only a small sample of the sights and experiences waiting for you on a Cuba cruise vacation with Norwegian Cruise Line.

Carnival Cruise Line

And in between, bond over bites with over 20 ways to dine. You’ll always find bold adventures onboard Independence of the Seas®. From non-stop thrills to mouthwatering dining and the hit Broadway musical Grease, this fan-favorite is your ticket to a memory-maxing getaway. Feel the heat of adventure in The Magic City and cool off with with a cruise to the Bahamas or Caribbean from the Miami cruise port on some of our most amped up ships yet. There’s perhaps no sweeter travel proposition than taking that proverbial bite out of once-forbidden fruit . And juicy Cuba, with its vibrant culture, lively locals, rich history, and transporting tropical setting, is ripe for the picking.

Horse-drawn carriages also offer tours of Old Havana City. Cruise shore excursions are usually organized by the cruise company/ship operator in cooperation with Havanatur (state-owned Cuban tour agency). A smaller number of passenger privately hire local tour guides or taxi drivers (of restored classic American cars) for city touring. Ultimately, I think Fathom has some work to do with its current product, but it's definitely on the right track — it was an inaugural cruise after all, so we were essentially the guinea pigs. I had an absolute blast visiting Cuba on this historic sailing and will always remember the places we visited and the people we met.

Find and plan your next cruise out of Florida to Cuba

I spent quite some time relaxing (and working) in the library, which offered several shelves full of books and board games that guests could sign out as long as they returned them by the end of the cruise. There was also a jogging track around the top level of the ship, as well as a fitness center — yoga and meditation sessions were free of charge, but pilates and cycling classes were available for an additional fee. There was also a soothing spa and relaxation area — available for an extra $26 per day plus spa treatments — and a hair salon so you could get a quick trim or style before a big night out. In addition to the Craze Band, Fathom arranged for a local Cuban band to join us between Havana and Cienfuegos, and another from Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba, (pictured above).

The sinking of USS Maine in Havana Harbor during the Cuban revolt against Spain in 1898 became a major political issue and the immediate cause of the Spanish-American War (April 21 - August 13, 1898). Its terms were favorable to the USA, allowing temporary US control over Cuba. The war also resulted in the USA ceding ownership of the islands Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. Cuba sits a mere 90 miles from the coast of Florida, but for the past 50 years it may as well have been on the other side of the world, due to regulations that made it a forbidden land for American citizens to visit.

MSC Armonia's First Cruise From Miami To Cuba

But it’s more than just convenient — rev up for your cruise from Miami with the city’s nonstop action, from party-ready South Beach to the Mediterranean style of Coral Gables, plus spicy Little Havana, which hums to an island beat. Once you’ve experienced all the South Florida architectural beauty, energetic street life and sun-kissed beaches, you may want to extend your stay in the Magic City after your cruise returns. Thomson only sells cruises in the U.K., so it's unlikely that U.S. passengers will be on the cruise.

Land Vacations

This explains why these port cities are used as seasonal turnaround ports for homeporting (roundtrip itineraries) by many major cruise companies with ship deployments in the Caribbean. Below we’ve picked out three of the best cruises to Cuba from Miami. FORT LAUDERDALE — A search is underway for a cruise ship crewmember who went overboard while the vessel was still at sea before docking in South Florida this weekend. Fathom works with Havanatur, a land-based, government-run Cuban tour company that manages the land-based bus and walking tours. While the tour guides spoke almost-perfect English and did the best they could handling large groups of excited American tourists, it was often hard to hear their explanations. In some places, a few people (including myself) missed their buses and got lost for a little while since some of the guides were better at keeping track of their 35-person tour groups than others.

Break up with your weekly routine and set sail on a memory filled getaway that’ll take you so much further than a standard staycation. Royal Caribbean® offers plenty of bolder-than-ever weekend sailings to some of the Caribbean’s most stunning shores onboard the world’s most incredible cruise ships — no days off required. Which means you can fill your year with even more bucket list adventures.

The program is not compatible with people-to-people, however, so it's pretty unlikely many from the U.S. can go.

Regardless of their US citizenship status, Cuban-born Americans were denied booking on cruise itineraries visiting ports in Cuba. The first Royal Caribbean ship to Cuba was Empress of the Seas with roundtrips from Miami and Tampa. The itinerary program started on April 19, 2017 (5-night Miami to Costa Maya and Havana).

In 2019, Cuba was slated to welcome a record number of US cruise tourists as in 2019-Q1 (January-May) were handled ~400,000 (100% increase over 2018-Q1). Tourism is Cuba's second-biggest source of earnings (after medical services), with annual revenues estimated at ~USD 2,5 billion. SInce 2017, Alaska Airlines offers regular nonstop flights to Havana from Los Angeles (California USA). An 80-min JetBlue flight from Fort Lauderdale (Florida) to Havana costs less than USD 100. Previously, air travel from USA to Cuba was through charter flights only.
